Chapter Six

Khaos sat on the craggy floor of the tunnel, Henry nearly on his lap. He knew he should push the human away, but after waiting so long to have Henry back in his arms, it was close enough, yet much too far away.

The heart.

They were here for the heart. He kept repeating the mantra in his head, trying to force himself to do what he’d been asked to do by his Drakon, his brother.

Mates came second.

Khaos released an intake of air, knowing that was wrong. Mates always came first, no matter what. Rhaege wouldn’t believe that line of thinking, yet if their roles were reversed, Khaos knew his brother would be stuck in the same situation, pulled in two different directions.

The sounds Maksim had heard grew louder. The Earth dragons were growing closer. If it was indeed Earth Dragons. “Maksim?” he whispered.

“What?” Maksim hissed back.

“What if that’s Mestopheus?”

Maksim was quiet a moment. “Then we need to ensure he doesn’t leave with what we’ve come to find.”

“We can’t just sit here and wait it out. We’ve got to get in there.”

Maksim shook his head emphatically. “The signs led us here, but we don’t even know the stone is out there. We can’t risk showing our hand. Not yet. We have to see what we’re up against.”

“And if the stone is there, we need to capture it. We can’t just sit here and let someone else take the heart.”

Maksim snarled. “I won’t let you endanger this mission because you’re impatient.”

“And I won’t let the stone slip through our fingers because you’re too scared to act.”

Maksim moved closer, his face inches from Khaos. “Using logic doesn’t mean we’re fearful of anything.”

“Logic? How is hiding in the shadows logic?”

“We’re waiting for them to leave.”

“And if they don’t?” Khaos was over this Ice Dragon.

“Then we run in and hope for the best.”

Khaos shook his head. “For all your supposed logic and forethought, this plan has been shit from the first minute. Maybe the stone is here. Maybe it’s not. You have no idea what you’re doing.”

“Then be my guest. Rush on out and get captured. Then I can look for the heart while they’re beating you. That’s a great plan.”

Khaos stood, pulling Henry to his feet. “We don’t have time to sit here hiding. If the heart is out there, then we need to capture it before Mestopheus gets here and steals it.”

Pulling Henry along, Khaos brushed past Maksim. Once he got to the head of the tunnel, he returned the cell to Henry. “Stay here, in the shadows. I’ll be back for you soon.”

Henry clasped Khaos’ arm. “And what if you don’t come back?”

Khaos leaned in and kissed Henry, his tongue swiping into the human’s mouth. His body was instantly at attention again, his cock ready to claim what was his. With great effort, he pulled away. “I’ll be back for you. But if I’m not, the phone more than likely has a compass. You want to move southeast to get out. Do you hear me?”

Henry nodded.
